Warcraft 4 rumors special (1/4)
This is the first part of our “Warcraft 4 rumors” series. In the next weeks we feature the hottest Warcraft 4 rumors available on the net.
In his detailed article Alex Taldren speculates about Blizzard’s future after World of Warcraft and the announcement of Starcraft 2. Futhermore he pictures interesting patterns in Blizzard’s development:
• It spends roughly 1-2 years between releasing games, expansion packs, and sequels
• It releases expansion packs to all of its games with the exception of only two
• It fully develops its story through sequels of the same genre type before switching genres
• Its franchises represent the “if it ain’t broken, then don’t fix it” motto
• It sticks to its PC gaming platform well while catering to Apple gamers
He thinks very pessimistically about another Warcraft sequel. From his point of view there isn’t a good chance for Warcraft 4, because of WoW and it’s characteristic as an MMO. He compares a MMO to “a series finale for a television show” and WoW is such a finale. Further he does a queer statement: “It would be hard to return to a franchise that currently has an ever-changing and continuing game.” But he seems not to think of, that a RTS game is completely different from a MMORPG.
This is definitely going to be a stretch, but what are the chances of Blizzard revisiting Warcraft with another RTS? Well, in reality, the chances are very, very poor. If they do revisit the Warcraft series it will probably be in the form of a World of Warcraft 2, but that won’t be until they draw out WoW with expansion packs.
I have one major and convincing reason as to why they won’t and can’t make another Warcraft RTS game, even if it is just for an extended period of time. The MMO is, without a doubt, an interesting genre to approach. One of the reasons for why World of Warcraft is so successful is because of the franchises development from Warcraft to Warcraft III. It is in my opinion that MMOs that are released as stand alone franchises that have no prior development are practically doomed from the start. While some MMOs get their development from movie franchises (Lord of the Rings Online and The Matrix Online), others get theirs from previous games (World of Warcraft), and the rest — the ones that do poorly overall — have no prior development. Regardless of this fact, however, the MMO genre should be classified as “the end genre.” Why? Well, think of it as a series finale for a television show. A series finale brings closure, but also brings an open-ended feeling. MMOs are usually defined as open-ended RPGs on a massive scale. The very nature of an MMO corresponds with that of a series finale. It would be hard to return to a franchise that currently has an ever-changing and continuing game.

While I agree that it will take a while to bring out a War4, I think that Blizzard has several avenues to go down in order to keep the tradition going: make a prequel that sets up all of the stories and go back to before the first one (then it doesn’t have to be called War4, but something else); continue the story after WoW with new enemies, etc.; come up with new races, or focus on the ones that were introduced in War3, such as the Draenei and Naga; make a hero out of Rexxar in which you lead armies of ogres/orcs, there are plenty of options, and I, personally, would love to see Blizzard continue the series, because I love RTS, not MMO, which ruins the whole concept of Warcraft in the first place.
i agree with Tracy i love the wc RTS much more than WOW im not sure why but its just because mainly the whole idea of wow is that u play in the world of warcraft, its not any of the lore which is what makes wc so cool, also i think they should explore more into the fallen, the race that sylvannas created with her banshee friends when she was killed and ressurected by arthas and yeh i think it wud also be a good lead in for the movie WHICH I THINK WOULD BE MUCH BETTER BASED ON WC3-TFT, IT HAD A MUCH BETTER STORYLINE AND PEOPLE WHO HAVENT PLAYED WC COULD SEEE IT AND GET THE JIST OF IT!! AND THEN U CUD HAVE THE ENDING AS THE END OF TFT AND HAVE A SEQUEL FROM THERE IF RATING WERE GOOD ENOUGH….my opinion, anyone agree?
See i agree with both Chris and Tracy. Its true that MMO’s are ending genres because they take everything great about their previous games and put it into this world where you can play in for infinite amounts of time BUT what i think blizzard should realize is that their core audience is leaning towards a sequal to Warcraft 3 and not another WoW. I love warcraft 3 and i still play it, WoW not so much, but warcraft 3 is becoming dated and fans want something new to the franchise just not the MMO. WoW should not have been made is all im trying to say and they could have focused more on another RTS but its too late and i dont think we will see Warcraft 4 for a long time even they decided to make it right now. the reason being is that they are probly working on another WoW and the they would have to top warcraft 3 with warcraft 4 which would be a challenge. I want warcraft!(just not the mmo)
vincent i agree. ppl stil playing warcraft 3 over many years and they still play it bec its epic game.my opinion that wc4 will be realesed sooner or later bec blizz guys are not stupid and they see that wc3 is still popular.for that reason theay will make it..im sure about it.peace and love to wc3 fans
I don’t like MMO games, and i love RTS especially Warcraft. I think Bizzard should do patchs for War3FT reporting the events of the WoW, i don’t understand why Blizzard focus only in the MMO WoW, ignoring the beginning of the game and whom follow it since the beginning.
Seriously, you guys say stuff like core audience would rather have Warcraft 4 over another wow?
Look how many people play WoW as compared to the number of people on Battle.net…Not just warcraft 3, if you compared the amount that play warcraft 3, to the amount that played WoW you would see that the “Core” Audience is playing World of Warcraft
That is beacuse they dont have war4. War and wow each have its own core audience. People that play war 4 wont play wow and the other way around. So they should release both of them so we can all be happy:)
Warcraft 4!!!!!!! FTW
Wc3 is so much better then WoW because A) the custom matchs give u room to do w/e the FUCK you want- including WoW on wc3……………….. in afct look at dota it is Rpg based since u control a hero and use it own everything. Also because in wc3 lore u are takign the race and their armies into account not making it into a bunch of gay little raids that r retarded and boring and if u die *OH WELL I GET REVIVED*. Oh and the campign movies in wc3 ehance the lore further then WoW raids, or trailers ever could…….. did I mention how customizable RTS maps are?
There has to be a Warcraft 4, seeing as whenever you log onto Warcraft 3 there are still 70,000 people playing at that same time. Blizzard releasing another WoW would just make them lose a lot of customers who are waiting for WC4.
+ theres actually skill involved in RTS’s,
SO MAKE A WARCRAFT 4!!!!!!!!!!!!
They really need a WC4. I’m a die-hard WC3 fan, and I’ve been playing it since almost the start. I recently got WoW and there is no comparison, WC3 is still my favorite game. I’m gonna play WoW however, since I payed the stupid 90 something bucks for it and all the expansion packs. But more to the point, true Blizzard fans became true Blizzard fans, because of the RTS.(Diablo excluded) WoW should be a seperate title, and as so many before me have said, WC4 should be released as a sequel to WC3, and ignore WoW completely. Start from where WC3 left off, and take off from there. I guarantee, plenty of people play WoW, only because they want to see where the story goes. With a WC4 they HAVE TO RELEASE!!!!! many people would buy it. I could find thousands of people who agree with me, without even trying. Blizzard would be stupid to not make a WC4. It’s just the next step in the right direction.
Oh, and it will be made. If I have to personally, go out and learn to make games myself, and spend the rest of my life making it, I will. But I’m not worried, Blizzard has to hear the thousands of people screaming for a WC4.
I hope that even if they do release a warcraft 4, that they split the races,in warcraft 3 you have the tauren that are forged together with the orcs,i would really like them to split all the races, and that you have all the races, draenei, orc, tauren, blood elf, human,.. wouldnt it be nice to construct a draenei base, or build a tauren camp, or even a blood elf kingdome. I hope this fantasy becomes reality, that game has a lot of potential, many people who are diehard wow freaks(i play wow as well) dont even know that all the things they encounter are things that come from warcraft 3 and the previous warcraft games.. as example the paladin, i still remember my days when i played the paladin in warcraft 3.. ^^ good old days…
i agree with all those that want a warcraft4. i have been waiting and waiting for a sequel to warcraft3. I want to know what they story line would be for war4. Like another heir for the alliance rises up and thrall and jaina train him till he is ready to lead the alliance against Arthas or something like that. So many people are waiting for another sequel, i know it. Does anybody else have an idea for a sequel? like what would the story line be
It would definitively be great to make the game look more fun and realistic in appearance and story.
Saying that they should only focus on WC3-4 and getting rid of wow is a very stupid comment no offence, WoW is appealing to many people and so is wc3 but ever since wows release numbers skyrocketed in gameplay so thats what they have been focusing on lately. and not just people who play MMOs only play MMOs i play wow and i love it, i play WC and love it too, dont make these biased and ignorant comments when you dont know wtf you are talking about

that is complete (pardon my french) bull shit!!!! Everyone loves warcraft 1, 2 , and 3. I don’t have WoW, because personally, i don’t want to pay the weekly or monthly fee it is. I’d rather play a game with a more of an army,(but I haven’t played so I may be wrong on this) than a game by myself, where I need friends to survive. WoW looks and seems really gay! Now WoW may be strategy game too, but the original warcrafts are so cool, fun, and can be challenging or easy depending on how you change the difficulty.
please add or correct me on any things you found wrong with my statement. GO WARCRAFT 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The story of warcraft 4 will be originated from the big past incidences that took place at WOW. The biggest legendary players character names will be given and there will be episodes related with those ones. After all I guess , we will lead arthas once more…
Please blizzard!!!!!!!! For the godsake give me the WC4 now !!!! I can not effort to wait….
))
I’ve played Warcraft 1 for ages and really loved it.
Then came Warcraft 2 and i was totally adicted, Did a lot of LAN-games and stuff. Then Warcraft 3 was released and I’ve been playing that even more (if possible), ‘am online all the time. Guess what I want Blizzard to do…
warcraft is a great series, wc2 was the first game i ever got and i’ve been hooked on the franchise ever since, but they definately need to make a wc4 – WoW was good because it allowed you to get into the world as a normal “Azerothian” of some description, but it’d be great if they went back to the storyline of the Alliance battling for their homeland – and it’s not like that couldn’t happen, there are Alliance nations out there (if we assume the state of affairs will remain what it is in WoW)- you’ve got people from Kul Tiras, Stormwind, the survivors of Stromgarde and Jaina’s little settlement, Dalaran used to be an alliance nation, and there are probably a few others out there to. Also, i think they now have an opportunity to make it a far more tactical and strategic game with new technology they now have – think of something like the warcraft world crossed with the gameplay of Rome: Total War. Anyway i just reckon that’d be cool….
Warcraft has to be one of my favourite RTS series of all time (if not THE favourite) I loved warcraft 1, although I never played it until warcraft 2 came out, warcraft 2 was awesome because of it’s great storyline. I play warcraft 3 all the time, although I only got it 2 years ago, when I first played I thought that the storyline was phenomenal. And just this year I tried WoW… I thought it was kind of pathetic. I mean I know why lots of people would love it but to me it just took away from the storyline of Warcraft 3. Plus its so damn expensive you have to give an arm and a leg just to play the damn thing. Someone said here about going on raids in WoW, I agree whole heartedly, I love the old school rush into battle with an ARMY full of catapults, archers, footmen, and priests to take down a city. Anyway I think that if blizzard made a warcraft 4 that a lot of people would play it instead of WoW. And anyone who says that the core audiance is in WoW are right only because blizzard focus solely on it and not another warcraft RTS. I think that if blizzard made warcraft 4 with a few new elements (like having custom heroes, like in battle for middle earth 2, that you can use for melee maps) or even just things like splitting the undead into the scourge and forsaken, and making the blood elves and naga a playable race, same with the draenei. Anyway the point is that lots of WoW players play WoW because they spent money on it to play a character, so if they quit now they would feel that it was money wasted. I’m not sure if I want blizzard to ignore all the WoW lore, make a prequel, continue after WoW, or make an RTS during the time of WoW, its to big of a concept to make a decision so fast, but personally I think warcraft 4 SHOULD be made and that it should ignore WoW lore. (holy crap this is long…)
WoW would have been a more “acceptable” ending if wasnt for a few simple facts 1 u gota pay to play every month or ur acount closes and blah 2 in order to do wat i geuss would be called “balancing” the game u have messed with the entire story for example forsaken/orcs allied doesnt seem likely 3 many of the other important races such as scarlet crusade seem more like a huge group of bandits instead of a last hope for lordearon thing and 4 insanly powerful heros runing around with there 5k armor seems to print the image that it should be nearly impossible to lose in the begining making u ask if there were guys this powerful how did a few zombies n cultist take out lorderon
I agree with krajan I played WoW for a little while but thought it was too expensive. If they follow WoW lore they would have to make the horde and the forsaken allied which is unlikely. Well I think that it would be cool if they made a prequel, ignored WoW lore or remade warcraft 1 (although this is very unlikely but I still think it would be cool).
i would like to learn how to play this where can i find the real game
err what do you mean? warcraft 4 hasn’t been made yet… and warcraft 3 is hard to find in most places…
Don’t you have a date for the launch of warcraft4.
When he will launch.
Please tell the date.
ok if you mean when warcraft 4 will launch then my answer is sometime after diablo 3 so 2 or 3 years from now…
Hahaha I just thought about some guy here who said about making ignorant comments about WoW. Well I believe that Blizzard should keep making WoW but completely ignoring WoW’s origins is not the best move. But to be fair Blizzard is known for their long periods in between sequels (like the difference between starcraft 1 and 2 or diablo 2 and 3) so if Blizzard follows this pattern then it makes sense that Warcraft 4 would be far into the future. I don’t know the time difference between when Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne realease dates but it seems that the WoW expansions are coming out pretty quickly… like isn’t there supposed to be another WoW expansion? But Blizzard should have paid more attention to their other projects like Starcraft because I mean seriously ten years in between games? umm yeah I was just looking up Warcraft stuff when I can now confirm the new WoW expansion… for everyone who hasn’t already seen it’s Warcraft Cataclysm and it features two new races the Goblins and the Worgen… well at least the Worgen look cool but goblins seem underpowered but I suppose that they might be a lot like the gnomes. But yeah this seems kinda sudden just after Wrath of the Lich King. Anyway this is all I have to say at the moment.
Oh by the way WARCRAFT 4 FTW!!!!
i think that A Warcraft4 RTS would be great for when wow comes to an end, then it can be used to tell the story between the end of WoW and the Dawn of WoW2, which will prob happen eventually. it wont be long b4 wow becomes old and worn out. im a fan of both th RTS and the mmo.
But they seriously messed up the story line in WoW like whats the deal with deathwing coming back? he died back in the W2 expansion Beyond the Dark Portal. I’m kinda confused on why everything went to hell. The MMO is all right but I prefer the RTS.
buy a game.is very very excelent.
my game favorite is warcraft 4.
I am a major fan of RTS. I loved the warcraft 2. But when warcraft 3 came out I was totally into it. I prefer the RTS over th MMO or RPG. Warcraft 4 would be a great hit. I would totally buy it.
I loved the blood-elves best but when it just ended with Ilidan promising to destroy the frozen throne it wasn’t quite and ending.
yeah I agree, I like the RTS over the MMO and I liked the new races (night elves and undead) that you got in warcraft 3, but the one thing that pissed me off was the final fight between Illidan and Arthas, I mean seriously why couldn’t they just make it CGI like the other cutscenes… and if they DO make warcraft 4 they need to make naga and blood elves both playable races cause they were my favourite hands down.
wow I’ve posted on here so many times…
cen ia WORK
Look PEOPLE WARCRAFT 4 WILL NEVER BE RELEASED THERE IS NO POINT. Although Wow suks and Warcraft 3 is better Because Blizzard included A Full system of Custom map making and Adding models. War 3 has been able to expand without constant assistance thus war 4 would be pointless as there would be little much which is new. even if they did have ideas it could be copied to war 3.
Probably the best thing they could do is have a patch to Completly improve the Engine For war 3 And make it so A match can join another match so if two matches were hosted they could join and have 24 people playing at once on the same map or somin. So Rpg’s on war 3 could expand to about 6 games where each map is along side each other or all on 1 map Where u can freely travel or some specila mod like htat. Or they could release some models or increase races. Or Have complete new hero system or somin. but Tbh WAR4 is pointless kinda When they can just have dl to expand the already Huge varietty of maps and models for war 3
THERE IS NO NEED OR PROFIT FROM A WAR4 , Unless they had to complelty change income systems which would be a simple patch so really people Stop Asking is there A war4 cause there isnt.
This was never really about there being a Warcraft 4… it was just about people like me wishing there was one. Personally I think they should release a new warcraft RTS, by that I mean an expansion for warcraft 3 or something like that. They need to do something to warcraft 3 to make it a little but fresher. Don’t get me wrong I love how it is right now, but I wish Blizzard would do something, anything, to give it a newer feel… that’s just me though.
