Blizzard recently announced that there will be no BlizzCon 2012. Instead Blizzard will host an eSports event in Asia at the end of this year.

The Event will be called Battle.net World Championship were pro gamers will be able to compete against each other in StarCraft 2 and World of Warcraft tournaments.

As the main reason why the company will not hold a BlizzCon in 2012 Blizzard says:

“We’re also heavily focused on getting Diablo III, Mists of Pandaria, and Heart of the Swarm into players’ hands as soon as possible. In light of our jam-packed schedule, we’ve decided to hold the next BlizzCon in 2013.”

Beside WoW, StarCraft, Diablo 3 and the still unannounced Next-Gen-MMO with the working title “Titan” there is another secret project Blizzard is working at. There might be a small chance that it is Warcraft 4. But since BlizzCon (let’s pretend WWI is just a BlizzCon outside the U.S.) is the best place for Blizzard to announce news games or add-ons it seems as if there is likely no chance to find out this year.

But heads up! Diablo 3 will finally ship this year and it took Blizzard more than a decade to bring out the third part of the Diablo trilogy. So maybe the will need much longer to release the fourth part of Warcraft?

As you guys might have heard, Blizzcon 2010 is going to take place in a few weeks – October 22-23.

And every time Blizzard is celebrating it’s great franchises – Warcraft, World of Warcraft, StarCraft and Diablo – together with the fans attending, rumors come up which great announcement Blizzard is going to make.

This year vgtribune.com is arguing that Warcraft 4 might be announced this year during the opening ceremony.

According to a “fairly trusted source”, vgtribune reports that Warcraft 4 is under development and lists what the newest sequel to Blizzards successful rts-series shall feature:

• Episodic campaign was considering – no word on what they decided.
• Thrall is “currently” in it.
• The game is planned “tentatively” for a Q4 2012 release.
• Its an RTS based on the Starcraft II engine.
• Its being considered for multiple platforms like the 360 and PS3, but DS has actually been started on.
• It now finally has a team working on it since Starcraft is out.
• Its still very early stages and the concept art looks “beautiful”.

The problem about such news is that a “fairly trusted source” is mostly everything but trustworthy. And as this is right now the only  news about Warcraft 4, there are good chances that this rumor will not be proven as true.

There haven’t been much new information, hints or even rumours about a potential sequel to the  Warcraft-Franchise during the last two years, which means: It’s still uncertain if there ever will be a Warcraft 4.

But nevertheless, for certain reasons we still believe that Blizzard just will have to develop another Warcraft-Title for one of the world’s most popular real-time strategy series.

So we decided to say goodbye to our old, crappy and spambot affected board – which wasn’t really much fun being there – and put some work and money into brand-new community-forums, working with VBB 4, to crate a great place for passionate Warcraft fans to wait for Warcraft 4. Unfortunately postings made in the old forums could not be saved.

The blog Tobolds doesn’t believe in another sequel of a Warcraft RTS Game. But not because of Starcraft 2 and the potential competition with Warcraft 4. The authors thinks, that Warcraft 4 wouldn’t have such a great commercial success compared to WoW and other MMORPG. In his opinion Warcraft 4 would just be a “reasonably well selling RTS in a huge crowd of other RTS games”.

My personal take on that is that I doubt that “Warcraft 4″ will ever be released. Not because of lore, because lore can always be fudged. But because of the far more mundane concept of “return on investment”. Which investment do you believe would give higher returns, “Warcraft 4″, “World of Starcraft”, or some WoW expansion? In my opinion the WoW expansion is a sure moneymaker, World of Starcraft would be a potential multi-million dollar earner, and Warcraft 4 would just be a reasonably well selling RTS in a huge crowd of other RTS games. Blizzard has simply grown too big and too successful to still waste their time on some RTS game.

Is there any reason for creating a site for a game which is not even announced? Sure, there is!
A lot of people are wondering themselves if there will be a further sequel of the game which once was responsible for the beginning of Blizzard’s amazing success story.
At regular intervals forum posts can be read, in which the question is asked if not somebody already knows something about Warcraft 4.

At this point the discussion starts: “ On which game is Blizzard working at the moment? Will the Warcraft series ever be continued? How could the story of Warcraft go on after you have already beaten nearly every enemy in World of Warcraft?”
